Electronic Supervision of Technicians (EST) Service

Address your pharmacy workforce problems and control costs while meeting regulatory requirements with Envision’s Electronic Supervision of Technicians (EST) service.

Envision’s Envision’s web-based tools and imaging systems allow Envision pharmacists to supervise your pharmacy technicians while they perform medication-related activities normally allowed only under direct, on-site pharmacist supervision.

This cost-effective, improved pharmacy practice model extends pharmacist hours of availability during low volume hours or at low volume facilities, ensuring that pharmacists are available on an as-needed basis at an affordable price.  Hospitals without a full-time pharmacist or even those with a full-time pharmacist but needing to extend their days or hours of coverage are best suited to take advantage of Electronic Supervision of Technicians service.

Reduce medication errors and improve your medication-related processes.

The clarity and image definition achieved with our EST service allow a remotely located, designated Envision pharmacist to closely supervise and verify pharmacy technician work to a degree never before achievable.  In an industry-wide effort to decrease medication error rates, Envision’s high-resolution imaging and real-time communication tools helped usher in many of the recent changes in state laws and rules regarding remote supervision.1

How Envision’s Electronic Supervision of Technicians Service Works

Your pharmacy and a designated Envision Pharmacist are linked via the web using Envision’s web-based imaging and workflow tools.  Images of the pharmacy technicians’ work and documentation are captured and transmitted between the hospital and your Envision pharmacist.  As the medication order moves through your verification, preparation and dispensing stages, your Envision Pharmacist remains in touch with your technician via Envision’s web-based EST service, directing the technician to further process the work according to established procedures and the Envision Pharmacist’s professional judgment.  Technician duties that can be performed under the guidance of your Envision pharmacist with this service include, but are not limited to:

  • Work pursuant to medication orders
  • Medication order entry and entry of drug distribution information
  • Distribution of orders from stock supplies to patient care areas
  • Unit or multiple dose prepackaging
  • Compounding sterile pharmaceuticals
  • Accessing/restocking automated medication supply systems
